Adriano Moraes is one of the top pound-for-pound fighters on the ONE Championship roster and the flyweight champion enhanced his reputation in Kuala Lumpur on Friday (March 13, 2015) with a hard-fought decision win over tough Japanese challenger Asuka Mikami.
Moraes (13-1) has now won four straight fights but Mikami (11-3-1-1) pushed him hard and was able to repeatedly escape from adverse situations on the ground with the Brazilian unable to sink in one of his trademark chokes in the main event of ONE: "Age of Champions" at Stadium Putra.
Although he lost a clear-cut decision and tasted defeat for the first time since 2009, Mikami won the hearts of the Malaysian fans with a plucky performance. However it was Moraes who emerged victorious to mount a first successful defense of the title he won last September.
It was a good night for Malaysian fighters with all five of them registering stoppage wins culminating in Peter Davis (10-3) scoring a first-round stoppage win over former SFL champion Rajinder Singh Meena (8-2) who he put away with a flurry of ground and pound.
Ann Osman (3-1) needed less than a round to finish Walaa Abbas (2-3) with a rear naked choke while Ev TIng (9-2) underlined his 145-pound title credentials with an impressive second round submission win over Cary Bullos (7-3) with a guillotine choke bringing the tap.
The most dramatic moment of the night came when Malaysian flyweight Gianni Subba (5-1) put away Thanh Vu (5-4) in just 20 seconds after dropping him with a counter left hook and then finishing him with punches and soccer kicks.
There was also plenty of action when Kirstie Gannaway (2-0) took on debutant April Osenio with the Filipina doing same damage with her Wushu-based striking before the Singaporean stepped up a gear and finished the fight with a rear naked choke.
