Conor McGregor and Diego Sanchez have been engaged in a war of words for a while now, and Conor says that he almost secured a bout against him in Mexico last November.
Conor McGregor is on tour. The next UFC featherweight title contender and the champ, Jose Aldo, are in the midst of a multi-date promotional campaign to hype their UFC 189 bout, and it's been pretty entertaining so far. One tidbit of information that Conor dropped in the Los Angeles stop was that he almost secured a December 2014 bout with a man he has been clashing with for a while now (and it has kept on going) - lightweight Diego Sanchez.
When Sanchez's UFC 180 opponent Norman Parke backed out of their fight with an injury, McGregor asked to fight Sanchez on the Mexico card. And he was apparently somewhat close to getting the fight: (via MMA Fighting):
I had [UFC CEO] Lorenzo [Fertitta] on board," McGregor said. "Lorenzo was cool with it. But Dana didn't want it."
Parke pulled out in early October, and McGregor's January bout with Dennis Siver wasn't officially booked until late that month, so it's at least possible. And Conor did even announce that he was going to fight him way back when. Sanchez also stated that he'd like that fight.
Obviously Dana made the right move though, even without the benefit of hindsight.
UFC 189 goes down July 11th in Las Vegas.
