Conor McGregor is on a tour hyping his UFC 189 fight with Jose Aldo, and it seems that he let the hype slip into the ridiculous with a comparison to Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao.
Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao is the fight that combat sports fans have been looking forward to for years. It will finally go down on May 2nd and will almost surely be the biggest PPV event of all time, dwarfing anything that the UFC has done to date. That's not stopping Conor McGregor from comparing it to his UFC 189 bout with Jose Aldo though. Seriously.
McGregor and Aldo are on a multi-city tour hyping their main event bout, and this particular little circus rolled into Los Angeles today. Conor is obviously known for his bombastic statements, but this one might take the cake - he actually said that UFC 189 will compete with the number of PPV buys Floyd vs. Manny does. Here's how it went down (via Jeremy Botter of Bleacher Report):
"I think we're going to compete with Mayweather and Pacquiao," McGregor said.
One journalist asked McGregor if he expected his Aldo fight to do 4 million pay per view buys.
"We will see. Is that what you estimate Mayweather and Pacquiao to be?," McGregor asked. The reporter said his personal estimate was 3.5 million.
"Three and a half? I don't think so," McGregor replied. "I am not interested in that fight as much as this one."
Whether you believe the 3.5-4 million or not (the record right now is 2.48 million) it's the height of hilarity to think that McGregor vs. Aldo would do anywhere near that. Breaking a million would be a minor miracle in my eyes.
Conor is doing what he does best though - getting people talking about his fights. UFC 189 goes down July 11th in Las Vegas.
