Mind officially blown.
In 2013, Justin Verlander signed a contract worth $180 million to remain pitcher for the Detroit Tigers for five more years.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. will earn that in one night.
That's according to New York Post, which has Floyd coming into a lot more "Money" than expected when he takes on Manny Pacquiao on May 2, 2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada. And it's not a measly $120 million as originally reported, but rather a staggering payday of $180 million, shattering sports salaries by more than a few pennies.
As Bob Arum stated, had this fight taken place a few years back, the purses wouldn't be as high as they are now because the economy wasn't doing too good.
"For whatever it's worth, the buildup over these years has certainly enhanced the fight. Everybody knows about it now, even people who don't follow boxing. Plus we have a good economy, unlike in 2009 when people were out of work and didn't have the money to spend."
You say five years too late, Mayweather says mo money, mo money, mo money!
As far as Manny is concerned, he is also expected to get a bump up to $100-120 million once it's all said and done.
Of course, the fact that ticket prices are expected to be pretty high (see them here), as well as the pay-per-view (PPV) rates ($100), will go a long way in ensuring that both "Money" and "Pac Man" are compensated handsomely to punch each other in the face.
The fight is expected to generate $74 million at the gate alone, with another $100 million coming in from sponsors and overseas broadcasting before a single PPV buy is purchased in North America.
And even when you subtract the $7500 from Ronda Rousey's free ticket from the final profits, Mayweather and Co. don't have to worry about going hungry anytime soon.
Are you rethinking your career path yet?
