Josh Thomson vs. Tony Ferguson set for UFC Fight Night in San Diego

A lightweight match-up between Josh Thomson and Tony Ferguson is on tap for UFC Fight Night in San Diego this July.

The quest for lightweight Tony Ferguson to extend his winning streak to six heads to San Diego, California on July 15th. "El Cucuy" will take on top 10 ranked Josh Thomson at UFC Fight Night on Fox Sports 1. UFC officials confirmed the news earlier today and the bout will air on the night's main card.

Ferguson (18-3) has been on a tear since a surprising 2012 loss to Michael Johnson and subsequent long layoff due to injury. The TUF 13 winner has finished 4 of his last 5 opponents, including consecutive rear-naked choke stoppages over Gleison Tibau and Abel Trujillo.

Thomson (20-7) is on a two-fight losing streak, but you could consider him unlucky to be on the wrong-end of split decisions to Ben Henderson and Bobby Green. In fact, Thomson's last 3 losses (adding in Gilbert Melendez) have all been split calls. The former Strikeforce champion was due to face Gilbert Burns in Rio two weeks ago, but he pulled out due to injury.

On paper, it's the biggest step-up in competition for Ferguson to date. Ferguson is 13th in the UFC's official LW rankings, while Thomson is 9th.

UFC Fight Night: San Diego is the Wednesday after Aldo vs. McGregor. It currently does not have a main event or any other fights announced aside from this one.
