An unconfirmed report coming out of Sweden says that light heavyweight contender Alexander Gustafsson will headline the UFC's return trip to Berlin against Glover Teixeira this June.
Alexander Gustafsson's next fight will apparently headline the UFC's latest trip to Berlin. According to a report from Swedish MMA website Kimura.se, Gustafsson will take on Glover Teixeira in a five-round light heavyweight fight on June 20th in the German capital at The O2 Arena. UFC officials haven't confirmed the fight themselves but according to Kimura's sources an announcement will be made later this week.
Gustafsson (16-3) was once in line to rematch Jon Jones at UFC 178 after the Swede finished Jimi Manuwa last March, but an injury to Gustafsson led to him being replaced by Daniel Cormier, and the immediate fanfare for Cormier vs. Jones led to Gustafsson needing to take another fight. He was matched up with dangerous striker Anthony Johnson inside a Stocholm soccer stadium at UFC on Fox 14 in January, but he suffered the first (T)KO loss of his career just 2 minutes into the fight, reducing Gustafsson to post-fight tears and the partisan crowd into stunned silence.
Teixeira (22-4) faced Jones for the light heavyweight title right after Gustafsson's loss to the reigning champion, losing a shutout unanimous decision and seeing his winning streak snapped at 20. A surprising unanimous decision defeat to Phil Davis at UFC 179 put him on his first ever losing skid. The Brazilian planned to face Rashad Evans in February but he pulled out with an injury, and evidently Evans would've had to do the same after he underwent another knee surgery.
Again, this is not a signed, sealed, and delivered fight just yet, but we will have updates on this potential bout when more information becomes available. If the UFC does make it official, the Berlin card is presently set to broadcast on Fight Pass, marking Gustafsson's 2nd appearance on the online subscription network in his last 3 fights.
