Last night (Sat., March 14, 2015), Chris Cariaso and Henry Cejudo slugged it out at UFC 185 inside American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. In a strong showing, Cejudo won a unanimous decision. Find out how below!
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) flyweights Chris Cariaso and Henry Cejudo collided last night (March, 14, 2015) at UFC 185 inside American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.
Cariaso entered this bout on the heels of a disappointing and dominant loss to Demetrious Johnson. Looking to rebuild momentum, Cariaso paired off with the undefeated Olympian.
Speaking of, Cejudo was one of the few hopes of a new prospect in the flyweight division. If he managed to make it past the former title contender, Cejudo made for an exciting new addition to the Top 10.
"Mighty Mouse" may have a new title challenger.
Outside of absorbing a few hard kicks to the body, Cejudo was very dominant inside the first round. Each time Cariaso looked to come forward, Cejudo would blitz him with some heavy shots. About a minute into the round, Cejudo showcased some of his vaunted wrestling ability, taking "Kamikaze" down with an inside trip.
While Cariaso was fairly quick to get back to his feet, Cejudo kept the clinch. From in close, Cejudo put a solid beating on his opponent, landing a high volume of knees while mixing in takedown attempts.
Cejudo continued to find success into the second round. He kept scoring with his strikes but relied more on his wrestling. Cariaso defended valiantly, but Cejudo landed his takedowns whenever he pushed for them.
From the top, Cejudo was able to land plenty of smaller strikes. He also avoided the submissions that Cariaso threw up, which were admittedly few and far between.
In the final frame, Cejudo finished the fight by controlling his opponent from the top. He never gave Cariaso the time or space needed for him to somehow make a comeback, as Cejudo took over the bout from very early on in the round.
This was a pretty great performance by Cejudo. While he didn't finish his opponent, he was very dominant and was never in risk of losing the fight.
Overall, Cejudo looked like a pretty complete product. He blended his wrestling and striking very well, which constantly kept Cariaso defensively weak. While Cejudo got a bit over zealous on some punches, it was an otherwise perfect showing.
Cejudo asked for a top five opponent, and he should get one. "The Messenger" will likely end up scrapping with Jussier Formiga next, as a win for either man would create a legitimate title challenger.
Plus, the style match up favors the Olympian.
Cariaso was simply out-matched in this fight. His title bid against Johnson made it clear that he was not at the uppermost level of the division, and Cejudo reinforced that lesson. "Kamikaze" is undoubtedly tough, but he doesn't have the physical tools to defeat the best flyweights in the world.
For his next match up, expect Cariaso to square off with someone either on the fringe of the top 10 or just outside it. For example, a match up with Brad Pickett would make sense.
