UFC Fight Night 62 results: Leonardo Mafra dominates Cain Carrizosa for scorecard sweep

RIO DE JANEIRO – After taking a big shot in the first round, “The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil” vet Leonardo Mafra waged a counterattack and didn’t relinquish control of the fight until the final bell.

Judges unanimously saw the bout for Mafra (12-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC), whose superior striking and grappling carried the day against Cain Carrizosa (6-2 MMA, 0-2 UFC).

The lightweight bout was part of the preliminary card of today’s UFC Fight Night 62 event at Maracanazinho Gymnasium in Rio de Janeiro. It aired on FOX Sports 2 following additional prelims on UFC Fight Pass and ahead of a main card on FOX Sports 1.

The final scores were 30-26 and 30-27 twice for Mafra, who picked up his first UFC win. Carrizosa remains winless in the octagon after two tries.

The two went toe-to-toe and slung heavy leather in the opening frame. A right hand clipped Mafra and sent him to the mat. Carrizosa followed and tried to secure a choke, but Mafra escaped before he could set anything up.

Immediately, Mafra upped his offensive output and started peppering Carrizosa with combinations of punches and kicks. The counters that Carrizosa was able to land were not enough to slow down his Brazilian opponent.

Hoping for a reprieve, Carrizosa tried to take the fight to the ground in the second and instead found himself defending against more flurries of punches. With two minutes left in the frame, Mafra finished his own takedown and worked ground and pound.

By the third frame, Carrizosa was running on fumes as Mafra put on a takedown clinic. A leglock attempt was Carrizosa’s last gasp as his opponent outworked him on the canvas.
