Last night (Sat., March 21, 2015), Erick Silva and Josh Koscheck clashed at UFC Fight Night 62 inside Ginasio do Maracanazinho in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In a classic Erick Silva performance, the Brazilian finished his opponent inside one round. Find out how below!
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweights Erick Silva and Josh Koscheck went to war last night (March 21, 2015) at UFC Fight Night 62 inside Ginasio do Maracanazinho in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Silva entered this bout looking to break his length win-one-lose-one streak. If Silva managed to put together his considerable talents, he could actually be a contender inside the crowded welterweight division.
On the other hand, Koscheck's days as a contender are clearly over. However, the powerful wrestler was still looking to prove he could compete at a high level.
To start the fight, Koscheck pursued his opponent with his right hand and double leg. Though he managed to get in deep on an early body lock, Silva's takedown defense held up and repelled the wrestler.
Then, Silva created some space and began tagging Koscheck. He caught Koscheck during a kick, sending his opponent to the mat. From there, Silva landed a few more heavy punches before Koscheck was able to scramble to his feet.
In the following exchanges, Koscheck tried to hang with Silva on the feet. He landed some decent punches, and his vicious overhand came close a couple times, but Silva was undoubtedly landing the better shots.
Then, Silva landed a stiff left hand that wobbled Koscheck. "Kos" attempted to recover by shooting for a double leg, but Silva wrapped up an arm-in guillotine.
Just like that, it was all over.
Silva continues to look like a monster in fights that don't leave the first round. His counter wrestling was on point last night, but he's usually pretty strong in that area early on. In short, this fight showed nothing new about Silva.
Inside the first round, "Indio" is an offensive destroyer.
Still, Silva is on a win streak now. He doesn't deserve a fighter inside the top 10 just yet, but a match up with a ranked opponent, such as Rick Story, would make sense. Alternatively, he could scrap with Ben Saunders, the man he was supposed to fight.
To his credit, Koscheck went out on his shield. The wrestler came forward hard, but he's simply not as durable as he once was. Against a fighter like Silva, that's a major flaw.
While I personally believe that there are a fair amount of fighters on the roster that Koscheck can still beat, the question is whether or not the UFC will want to foot the bill for the veteran to scrap with middling talent. Instead, Koscheck will likely end up back in the Fox Sports booth.
Then again, Bellator is in the market for fighters in their twilight years.
