A look at the Saturday, March 21st UFC Fight NIght on Fox Sport 1 from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where Demian Maia battles Ryan LaFlare in the main event.
UFC Fight Night Rio has taken several big hits to next Saturday's show. It lost its original main event of Urijah Faber/Raphael Assuncao, the co-main event of Gilbert Burns/Josh Thomson, and then the new co-main of Erick Silva/Ben Saunders, all due to injury. As a result, Demian Maia/Ryan LaFlare is the new main event out of the welterweight division, while Gilbert Burns meets newcomer Alex Oliveira, and Josh Koscheck possibly ends his MMA career with a short notice fight vs. Silva. I can assure you that I'm not fighting Erick Silva as some wiseass Wikipedia vandal edited a few days ago.
It's been a nightmare stretch of Brazilian-based UFC main events for the Brazilians, having gone just 2-5 in their last 7 cards. Maia is still hanging around in the top 10 while LaFlare is trying to elevate his status by recording the biggest win of his career.
Programming note: The prelims for this show will air on Fox Sports 2.
