UFC Fight Night: Maia vs. LaFlare main card results recap: Silva chokes out Koscheck

Bloody Elbow recaps the fights from UFC Fight Night: Maia vs. LaFlare last night in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Here we look at the co-main event between Josh Koscheck and Erick Silva.

The mixed martial arts community collectively raised its eyebrows in disbelief when it was announced that Josh Koscheck was stepping in to fight Brazilian fighter Erick Silva on short notice. Koscheck had only just been defeated by Jake Ellenberger on February 28, yet he had elected to take a fight in Brazil on less than a months notice.

Josh Koscheck vs. Erick Silva

Entering the cage last night, Koscheck was a huge underdog and it seems like the handicappers had it right, as he was outclassed from the get-go and quickly choked out by the ever-exciting Silva.

Result: Erick Silva def. Josh Koscheck via submission (guillotine choke) - Round 1, 4:21

What was the high point of the fight?

Silva looked great last night - his striking was as sharp as ever and he showed great confidence to go all in and jump guard with his guillotine.

Where do these two go from here?

It's time for Silva to once more test the waters and take a big fight in America. If Silva is willing to wait, I think a match up with Tyron Woodley would be intriguing. But he more than likely will try to keep busy, so I think a match up with Jake Ellenberger might be on the horizon.

It's the end of an era. The age of AKA dominating the welterweight division is truly at an end. Jon Fitch has fallen from grace with a drug test failure, Mike Swick has no set plans of an Octagon return and Koscheck is just not the fighter that he used to be. I agree with UFC president Dana White that now is the time for Koscheck to hang them up.

Watch now, later, or never?

Watch now. It was a dynamic performance from Silva, who seems to be finally putting it all together.
