Referees shouldn't steal the show in any sport, but Eduardo Herdy may have done exactly that on the UFC Fight Night: Maia vs. LaFlare preliminary card. He had some horrific moments, but getting past him, there were some very good moments of actual fighting on the prelims, which included a pair of violent knockouts. Here's a rundown on the results of all of the preliminary card bouts from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Fredy Serrano (2-0) def. Bentley Syler (5-1) via KO (uppercut) at 1:34, round 3 - Flyweights
This was a terrible fight with a lot of "feeling out" and not a lot of "meaningful offense", but the finish was worth the wait. Serrano KO'd his TUF Latin America teammate with a single uppercut which put Syler flat on his back. "Dr. Bolivia" was basically out before he hit the canvas and the fight was stopped instantly. Serrano was likely on his way to a decision win but he certainly pulled off one of the more spectacular KOs in the history of the UFC flyweight division.
Christos Giagos (11-3) def. Jorge Oliveira (7-2) via submission (rear-naked choke) at 3:12 of round 1 - Flyweights
Total blowout. Oliveira was taken down by Giagos, who soon found mount, shook off a heel-hook attempt, regained mount, then took the Brazilian's back. Giagos sunk in a rear-naked choke, Oliveira tapped once, twice, three times, four times, five times, six times, seven times, and maybe that eighth one served as a clue for the referee to stop the fight. Giagos picks up his first UFC win while Oliveira drops to 0-2 and probably is a goner.
Leonardo Mafra Teixeira (12-2) def. Cain Carrizosa (6-2) via unanimous decision (30-26, 30-27, 30-27) - Lightweights
Mafra survived an early knockdown and otherwise used his pressuring style and powerful, high-volume striking to trouble Carrizosa throughout the evening. Carrizosa was also soundly outwrestled and dominated on the ground, as Mafra was able to take him down with ease in the final two rounds and mount him on multiple occasions. Mafra was unable to finish the fight with a couple of kimura attempts, but he did enough to secure a very convincing decision victory in an entertaining contest. Mafra improves to 1-1 in the UFC having lost on short notice to welterweight Rick Story last year, while Carrizosa falls to 0-2.
Leandro Silva (18-2, 1 NC) def. Drew Dober (15-7) via technical submission (guillotine choke) at 2:45 of round 2 - Lightweights
Let's get things straight - There isn't a snowball's chance in hell that Silva legitimately won this fight. Referee Eduardo Herdy, the same one who let Jorge Oliveira tap 50 times to a rear-naked choke, somehow thought that Drew Dober went limp to an arm-in guillotine choke from half-guard. This wasn't remotely close to being the case, as Dober was escaping Silva's squeeze and trying to improve his position. For more on Mr. Herdy, click here. On the plus side for Dober, he will receive his win bonus.
Kevin Souza (16-3) def. Katsunori Kikuno (22-7-2) via KO (punches) at 1:31 of round 1 - Featherweights
Souza is heavy-handed fighter and Kikuno has shown in the past that he's quite willing to get hit. So it's no surprise that one right hand dropped Kikuno like a ton of bricks. It was a short fight, and Souza made sure of it with his powerful boxing. Souza remains unbeaten in the UFC while Kikuno drops to 2-2.
Francisco Trinaldo (16-4) def. Akbarh Arreola (23-9-1) via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) - Lightweights
Trinaldo was able to take Arreola down consistently and just keep him grounded for extended periods of the fight. It wasn't pretty, it wasn't exciting, and Arreola was just plain short on answers both in defending the takedown and doing anything other than throwing elbows from his back. Trinaldo picks up a 2nd straight win while Arreola falls to 1-2.
