Video: UFC fighter ruptures his achilles tendon in sparring session

It's not often that you see fighters actually have footage of their training injuries, but this UFC fighter did.

When you hear of an MMA fighter pulling out of a bout due to injury, the common reason is "cut my hand trying to split open an avocado" "injury sustained in training". What isn't common is an actual video of it happening, and this was the case for UFC lightweight Jason Saggo. The Canadian lightweight can be seen in the clip above doing some sparring, when a loud pop was heard as he planted his left foot on the ground. Saggo shouted "Oh f**k! Is that my ankle?! F**k was that my ankle?!" before his sparring partner rushed to his aid.

The injury turned out to be a ruptured achilles tendon, which was forced Saggo out of his April 11th bout against Marcin Bandel at UFC Fight Night in Krakow, Poland. Saggo was interviewed by Prince Edward Island newspaper The Guardian about the injury and his expected recovery time.

You can see in the video it wasn’t like we were going super hard," Saggo said.

"It just snapped and the sound was horrible," he added. "I’ve never heard my body make a sound that loud before."

Saggo said it was a “huge” setback for his career, but he expects to make a full recovery and be back in the octagon fighting by the end of the year.

“I had trained so hard and put all my time into it and then this happens,” he said.

Saggo (10-2) is 1-1 inside the Octagon, winning his debut vs. Josh Shockley last year before losing a decision to Paul Felder. UFC officials haven't named a replacement for Saggo, or if Bandel will remain on the card at all.

The promotion's debut is headlined by a heavyweight rematch between Gabriel Gonzaga and Mirko Filipovic.
