After losing to Ben Henderson via razor-thin split decision at UFC on FOX 10, Josh Thomson contemplated retiring from mixed martial arts (MMA). But with the chance of fighting in his home town of San Jose, California, the 36-year-old veteran declared he'd come back for another fight against Bobby Green, and perhaps another one after that, too.
Despite losing to Green in yet another split decision, "The Punk" is still not ready to hang 'em up, as he is booked to take on Tony Ferguson at UFC Fight Night 72 in San Diego, Calif., on July 15, 2015.
And since Thomson is still unclear of his fighting future after this fight, "El Cucuy" wants to make it easier for him, as he tells "UFC Tonight" that he plans to push Josh into retirement once and for all with a quick finish in sunny San Diego.
His words:
"He wanted to retire before this fight and I'm going to help him get there quicker. Fans are expecting fireworks. He's a very smart fighter. But I'll put my brown belt versus his black belt, like I did with Gleison Tibau. He's over at AKA. I haven't fought them, but I take great pride taking on great teams. This fight ends with a finish. I go in with a finish attitude and come out with a finish attitude. I'm not one of the guys who leaves it in the hands of the judges."
A loss would signal the third straight for the former Strikeforce lightweight champion, so even if he decides to stick around in MMA, there is no guarantee it will be with Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), as a skid like that usually calls for a pink slip.
Of course, Josh could keep the suspense down a bit and assure himself further employment with the promotion if he can manage to steal a win in his home state. It will be easier said than done, as he'll be taking on man who is on tear with a five-fight winning streak and only one loss in six years.
Should "El Cucuy" prove victorious once again, he hopes he'll finally get the respect he deserves. Something he feels has "taken too long" to get.
And who knows, he may even earn himself a shot at the division strap, too.
