Jorge Oliveira has been suspended for a year by CABMMA after a positive test for PEDs.
It appears that someone did pop for a banned substance on the UFC Fight Night 62 card after all. The Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission (CABMMA) revealed today that lightweight fighter Jorge Oliveira tested positive for stanozolol, a PED. He has been suspended for one year by the commission, retroactive to March 21st.
The commission originally said that everyone on the card passed their post-fight tests, but it wasn't the case. They explained the situation in a statement (via MMA Fighting):
"A communication error was identified by the Executive Committee when issuing the drug test results" due to "a misinterpretation of the partial report sent by the UCLA Olympic Analytical Lab (WADA Accredited Lab), where tests were analyzed and results confirmed.
...
This last sample code and its result were sent a day a part from the initial report, which in this case, was the reason of not being mentioned in the Commission's initial statement."
Oliveira (7-2, 0-2 UFC) was submitted by Christos Giagos in the first first round of their March bout. Giagos commented on it on Instagram after the news was revealed:
So this just happened hahah my opponent got caught for steroids. To bad steroids don't help with technique lol.
The bust comes in the wake of major stars like Anderson Silva and Hector Lombar testing positive for PEDs, which has led the UFC to promise more scrutinized testing and stiffer penalties in the future. They also hired an anti-doping czar, Jeff Novitzky, to lead the charge.
