The opening fight of the UFC on Fox 15 main card saw Paige VanZant recover from a shaky start to beat up Felice Herrig on the way to a decision victory.
Paige VanZant looks to be for real. The 21-year-old fighter got some flak for getting a Reebok deal after one UFC fight but she proved her mettle on the big stage tonight, laying a beating on Felice Herrig in the opening main card bout of UFC on Fox 15. After a bit of a shaky start, the strawweight took over the bout and controlled Herrig on the ground, emphasizing the win with a huge final round battering.
The judges had it 30-27, 30-26, and 30-26.
Herrig got the advantage early, taking advantage of VanZant being a bit overzealous and getting her to the floor. From there she took her back and almost sunk a choke, but VanZant escaped and got a takedown of her own. She swatted away Herrig's attempts from the bottom and landed a fair amount of strikes. She also went for a leglock late.
The pace stayed high in the second round with a lot of scrambling and reversals. She landed some good strikes on the ground and bruised Herrig up a bit, who was looking for submissions without much success. VanZant scored with a huge flurry late.
The third was all VanZant. She got Herrig down and beat her up with strikes for the entire round. The fight was on the verge of being stopped a couple of times but Herrig was able to intelligently defend. Nonetheless, Herrig was a mess by the end and it was obvious who the victor was.
