Two weeks ago, WSOF put on what is widely considered to be the promotion’s best card to date, but the event was nearly an absolute disaster.
Ahead of tonight’s “WSOF 20: Branch vs. McElligott,” WSOF matchmaker Ali Abdelaziz recalls how Matt Hamill’s unexpected illness caused a chain reaction that threatened the integrity of March’s WSOF 19 event.
Due to some quick thinking and a flexible roster of fighters, Abdelaziz made a series of changes that resulted in one of most entertaining nights in WSOF history, and the matchmaker believes it will go down in history as a real turning point for the company.

“Everybody that fought on WSOF 19, they just became a part of this company for life,” Abdelaziz told MMAjunkie. “I think now people understand we can put on great events.”
“WSOF 20: Branch vs. McElligott” takes place at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Conn. The event also featured a late change, as Ronny Markes withdrew from the card on the day of weigh-ins and was replaced by promotional newcomer Jesse McElligott, who now faces Dave Branch in the night’s main event.
