White: Jones to 'Probably' Fight Cormier in April
Wednesday, Feb. 3
White told Fox Sports to anticipate Jones' return in a few months.
"I don't have the date yet," White said. "I don't have the date or the venue, but April is looking like the month."
The 28-year-old Jones was widely considered the sport's best fighter until an April 2015 arrest on felony hit-and-run charges derailed his career. He was suspended and stripped of the UFC light heavyweight title he owned for nearly five years. He was reinstated in October 2015 but has yet to return to fighting.
Jones (21-1) was the youngest fighter to hold the UFC title and successfully defended it eight times, per Shaun Al-Shatti of MMAFighting.com. One of those eight fights was against Cormier, whom Jones earned a unanimous decision over in January 2015.
White isn't giving any more details yet, but as Al-Shatti wrote, "An April date keeps in line with the long-rumored target date of UFC 197, which takes place April 23 and remains without a main event."
Cormier (17-1), a former Olympic wrestler, defeated Anthony Johnson in May 2015 to earn the light heavyweight title.
