A number one contender bout between women's bantamweights Miesha Tate and Jessica Eye will happen at a UFC event in June, with the winner getting a title shot.
On the same day as the announcement of Ronda Rousey vs. Bethe Correia as the main event of UFC 190, another bout was revealed somewhat accidentally. Rousey told the media at Friday's UFC 189 press conference in Rio de Janeiro that fierce rival Miesha Tate will face Jessica Eye for the #1 contender's spot in the women's bantamweight division. UFC president Dana White also confirmed the match-up and said that the fight will take place at an undetermined event in June.
Tate (16-5) has won 3 straight following her 2nd loss in as many attempts against Rousey. "Cupcake" has beaten Liz Carmouche, Rin Nakai, and Sara McMann all by decision, and she survived a 1st round knockdown vs. McMann before rallying to take a majority nod on the scorecards. She is the only woman to take Rousey outside of the 1st round (in their rematch), but she still ended up getting her arm mangled anyway.
Eye (11-2, 1 NC) has had a topsy-turvy ride in the UFC. Her controversial debut win over Sarah Kaufman was overturned to a no contest after she failed a drug test for marijuana. Eye then found herself on the losing end of a split decision versus Alexis Davis at UFC 170, which propelled Davis towards a title shot and subsequent massacring by Rousey. She finally picked up her first UFC win via a doctor's stoppage after she beat up Leslie Smith at UFC 180 and caused Smith's ear to puff up and bleed grotesquely.
The June UFC schedule is as follows:
UFC Fight Night: Cormier vs. Bader (6th, FS1)
UFC 188: Velasquez vs. Werdum (13th, PPV)
UFC Fight Night: Berlin (20th, Fight Pass)
TUF Brazil 4 Finale (27th, FS1)
There's virtually no chance that they put this bout on the Brazil show, so that narrows it down to the other three cards. All that's left is to figure out which one they slot it for.
