UFC 185 results, photos: Less-than-thrilled Johny Hendricks rolls past Matt Brown

DALLAS – Matt Brown’s aggressive striking slowed down ex-champ Johny Hendricks’ wrestling, but it sure didn’t stop it.

Over and over, Hendricks (17-3 MMA, 12-3 UFC) deposited Brown (19-13 MMA, 12-8 UFC) to the mat and worked him over en route to a unanimous decision.

The welterweight bout was part of the main card of today’s UFC 185 event at American Airlines Center in Dallas. It aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and UFC Fight Pass.

The final scores were unanimously 30-27 for Hendricks, who got back on the winning track after losing his title to Robbie Lawler this past December at UFC 181. Originally scheduled for a rubber match with the current champ, Brown was instead slotted for the main-card fight when Lawler withdrew for some rest and recovery.

It took all of 40 seconds for Hendricks, a former national champion collegiate wrestler, to put Brown on his back. Brown got up, using a submission threat to create a necessary scramble. Hendricks, though, simply punched his way back into the clinch and muscled his opponent to the mat.

As the fight went into deep waters, Brown was increasingly ineffective as Hendricks held top position, doing enough, for the most part, to avoid a referee standup. Even several blatant fence grabs could not keep Brown upright.

It was Brown’s second straight loss since a loss this past July to Lawler. Both Brown and Hendricks hope to secure the next shot at the belt, though top welterweight Rory MacDonald will get the first opportunity in July at UFC 189.
