'Rowdy' Roddy Piper: CM Punk leaving millions of WWE dollars for UFC makes him a real man

WWE legend, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, says the fact that Punk left millions of dollars in wrestling to try something new takes plenty of courage.

It seems mixed martial arts (MMA) and professional wrestling -- for better or worse -- are synonymous with one another these days.

Though two completely different entities, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) have been mentioned in the same breath for quite awhile now, dating back to Brock Lesnar's days of leaving the scripted drama behind to claim the UFC's heavyweight title.

More recently, Ronda Rousey took time out of her busy schedule to step into the squared circle for a brief -- yet monumental -- appearance.

Now, CM Punk hopes to follow in the footsteps of Lesnar, as he too, left a career in WWE behind to try his hand at one-on-one combat inside the Octagon. It's a bold and courageous move according to one WWE legend, as Roddy Piper tells MMA Junkie he gives Punk -- real name Phil Brooks -- all the credit in the world for leaving behind a career that paid him millions to try something new.

In short, that's what a real man is made of.

"I didn't know that he was proficient in martial arts before that. Then I saw him with one of the Gracies -- he did a video. You know what? I give him all the respect in the world. I love the guy and he's got the courage to leave someplace where you have millions of dollars and to go on and try something else. That's what a man's made out of. How he'll do there? You know, we'll all watch. He's a smart kid and I think he'll do great."

Punk -- who now calls Roufusport home base -- will look to make his MMA debut this year against an opponent-to-be named.

And while the rest of the cage-fighting community had a mixed reaction to the former wrestler dabbling in MMA, he can count on having the backing of his former WWE counterparts.

If all else fails, maybe he can go back and get those WWE millions, much like Lesnar did.
