Stefan Struve optimistic about UFC future: Heart output was 60 percent, now 90

Stefan Struve isn’t the fighter you saw in a crushing loss to Alistair Overeem this past December, he said.

We caught up the towering 7-foot heavyweight while visiting his new Blackzilians camp in Boca Raton, Fla.

On Tuesday Struve discussed the UFC on FOX 13 loss, which followed a 22-month layoff due to a heart condition and medication that caused him to pass out backstage earlier in the year.

Struve (25-7 MMA, 9-5 UFC), who said his next fight booking is close to being announced, said he battled nerves and doubts during his fight with Overeem, but he doesn’t expect it to be an issue going forward.

“The fight with Alistair, it’s not an example of what I can do in there,” he told MMAjunkie. “It’s not the fighter I am, so if people think that’s where I’m at right now, they’re mistaken. I’m coming back. I’m going to be the best Stefan Struve they’ve ever seen – not as good as when I’m Stipe Miocic, but even better.”

Struve is 0-2 since that second-round TKO win over Miocic in 2012, but with his heart condition under control, the 27-year-old – who’s ranked No. 9 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA heavyweight rankings – believes the best is still ahead.

“There’s something different in my heart, but it’s not stopping me from doing what I do very good,” he said. “I was very high in the rankings at a point where my heart was only working 60 percent, so now I’ve got about 90 percent output instead of 60. That’s a big difference for me.”
