Check out the results from the first four main card bouts on today's special UFC Fight Night: Mendes vs. Lamas afternoon show in Fairfax, VA.
After a rather slow-paced preliminary card, the action picked up on the UFC Fight Night: Mendes vs. Lamas main card. Dustin Poirier opened things up in style, while Julianna Pena made the most out of her first appearance in the Octagon since November 2013. Clay Guida did Clay Guida things (such as burp) and Michael Chiesa and Mitch Clarke engaged in a predictably entertaining bout.
Here's a rundown on the results of the first four main card fights of the afternoon:
Michael Chiesa (12-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) def. Mitch Clarke (11-3 MMA, 2-3 UFC) via unanimous decision (29-26, 29-26, 29-28) - Lightweights
Michael was far too strong for Clarke to fend off, as the TUF 15 winner repeatedly hit judo trips and sweeps for takedowns. Chiesa also took Clarke's back multiple times and locked in the body triangle on numerous occasions. Despite all of this, Clarke wouldn't succumb to the rear-naked choke attempts. The Canadian was struggling to find any sort of offensive success aside from foot stomps, and he was rocked midway through the 1st round with a combination by Chiesa. It was pure domination by the Spokane, Washington native.
Clarke made things interesting in the 3rd round by turning up the tempo in the final round, landing decent punches on Chiesa and being the aggressor with the sense of desperation clearly in the air. Chiesa fired back with good countershots of his own but Clarke clearly took the final 5 minutes. Two Virginia judges awarded consecutive 10-8 rounds to Chiesa, which led to the unusual 29-26 scorecards, and it's hard to deny Chiesa those scores.
Julianna Pena (6-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) def. Milana Dudieva (11-4 MMA, 1-1 UFC) via TKO (strikes) at 3:59 of round 1 - Women's Bantamweights
Pena made her first post-TUF appearance and dominated Russia's Milana Dudieva for the easy TKO win. "The Venezuelan Vixen" took Dudieva down and passed to mount with ridiculous ease. From there it was just her throwing a lot of punches, hammerfists, and elbows as Dudieva offered nothing resembling an escape plan. Dudieva gave up her back, then ended up on her back again, and Pena finished the fight off with a pair of elbows. A somewhat sloppy set of finishing strikes but the sheer volume without any effective response from Dudieva was enough for Keith Peterson to stop the fight.
Clay Guida (32-15 MMA, 12-9 UFC) def. Robbie Peralta (18-6, 1 NC MMA; 4-3, 1 NC UFC) by unanimous decision (30-37, 30-37, 30-27) - Featherweights
"The Carpenter" had his way with Peralta in the wrestling department, taking his opponent down 6 times including one slam that opened up a cut on Peralta's face. Guida avoided the punching power of Peralta, but Peralta did well in the 2nd round to stuff Guida's shots. That wasn't the case in the 3rd, after Guida and Peralta exchanged a few strikes, Guida slammed Peralta twice and then mounted him. Guida had a deep arm-triangle choke that Peralta was able to survive but he ended up on his back one last time and took some knees to the body. Oh, and Guida ran around the cage after the fight ended, which is his thing.
Dustin Poirier (17-4 MMA, 9-3 UFC) def. Carlos Diego Ferreira (11-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC) via TKO (punches) at 3:45 of round 1 - Lightweights
Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Ferreira was willing to brawl with former featherweight contender Dustin Poirier, and that was a decidedly bad idea. Poirier dropped Ferreira with a left hand but wasn't interested in jumping into Ferreira's guard. When they returned to the feet, Poirier blasted him with another straight left and then a right, which made Ferreira's legs buckle and send him to the canvas again. Poirier shoved Ferreira's legs aside and finished the fight shortly thereafter. A successful return to lightweight for Poirier and a 2nd straight loss for Ferreira.
