One of the strangest fights of 2016 is the battle between Conor McGregor and the WWE roster.
The two parties have been exchanging blows online and through the media for a week now, and while it's easy to sit back and enjoy the chaos, one person seems to be sighing and shaking his head over the beef. That is Phil Brooks, better known by his ring name, CM Punk. The five-time WWE world champion and current UFC fighter gave his thoughts on the dispute—and had some harsh words for his former coworkers.
"The thing that shocked me the most about what Conor said was the number of people who work there who responded to him who should know better," Punk said in an interview with radio station Hot 97.
When asked if the locker room got worked, he responded: "I don't feel they got worked. They got worked. Come on. Ric Flair? Come on. Just stop. Just knock it off. ... You can fight with the idiots on Twitter, but from an outside perspective, somebody looking at that can't tell who the idiot is. Don't respond."
McGregor's statement on Twitter certainly got a disproportionately large outcry from the pro wrestling world, as dozens of noteworthy stars from past and present chimed in. Of course, that was likely mission accomplished for McGregor, who has made a habit of keeping his name in the news by smack-talking everyone from Jose Aldo to Donald Trump to Jesus Christ.
His recent smack talk came with one goal: attract more eyeballs to his upcoming fight at UFC 202. How does Punk see that fight going?
"I'm going to go with the numbers on this one," he said. "As much as I love the fact that McGregor doesn't back down from a challenge—with a full camp at 170, he doesn't really have to cut a whole lot of weight...I think Diaz is going to win."
Punk will step into the Octagon himself at UFC 203 in September opposite Mickey Gall. It will be fun to see how he fares in the cage—and even more fun to see what McGregor has to say about it afterward.
