Ex-UFC champ Benson Henderson vs. Michael Johnson? Count them in

Benson Henderson

Benson Henderson

How about a fight between former UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson and rising contender Michael Johnson?

It’s far from a done deal, but the fighters apparently support the matchup.

This past weekend, Henderson headed to Twitter to openly ponder potential matchups. The 31-year-old lightweight recently rebounded from back-to-back losses to now-champ Rafael dos Anjos and contender Donald Cerrone with a short-notice submission win over welterweight Brandon Thatch in February’s UFC Fight Night 60 headliner.

Henderson (22-5 MMA, 10-3 UFC) is apparently anxious to build off the victory, and he politely called out everyone from ex-lightweight champ Anthony Pettis to welterweight contender Tyron Woodley to reigning 205-pound champion Jon Jones (he seemed serious about all but that last one). He also mentioned Johnson (16-8 MMA, 8-4 UFC):

Johnson, who’s riding a four-fight winning streak and is now No. 10 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA lightweight rankings (where Henderson is No. 5), agreed to the proposed matchup (via Twitter):

There’s no potential date for the possible bout, though both appear eager to get back in the cage.

While a May fight between Cerrone (27-6 MMA, 14-3 UFC) and Khabib Nurmagomedov (22-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) is likely to determine the next challenger to dos Anjos’ recently won title, the Henderson vs. Johnson winner could stand out and make a solid case for the next shot or a title eliminator.
