UFC Fight Night 72: Josh Thomson vs Tony Ferguson set for San Diego

Oft-injured Josh Thomson -- who has competed just three times over the last two years -- will look to make it back inside the Octagon against Tony Ferguson at UFC Fight Night 72, which is scheduled for Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, Calif., on July 15, 2015.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) shared the good news earlier this evening on its official website.

Thomson, who was supposed to battle Gilbert Burns earlier this month in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, before being sidelined with a thumb injury, is in the midst of a two-fight losing skid. "Punk" failed in his bid to capture the Lightweight title from then-champion Ben Henderson at UFC on FOX 10 in Jan. 2014 via split decision. Six months later, Bobby Green did the same thing at UFC on FOX 12.

On the wrong end of 35, Thomson needs to first show up, then deliver a solid performance to demonstrate that he is still a 155-pound threat.

Ferguson, meanwhile, has been nothing but a threat -- he has strung together five straight impressive wins. And he has done it against stiff competition such as Gleison Tibau, Abel Trujillo and Katsunori Kikuno, among others, in decisive fashion.

Indeed, it appears The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 13 is hitting his stride. And a win over an established former No. 1 title contender like Thomson would get him right in the thick of the Lightweight title chase.

It's unclear at this time who will headline UFC Fight Night 72; however, expect the promotion make that announcement -- and many more for "San Diego" -- in the coming days and weeks.
