With Brock Lesnar out of the picture and Frank Mir now needing to look elsewhere for an opponent, Todd Duffee may get his wish.
Duffee (9-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC), who’s been openly campaigning on social media and with reporters for a fight with former heavyweight champion Mir (17-9 MMA, 15-9 UFC), is likely to get the matchup this summer.
Although not official, the bout is in the works for a “summer” card, according to “UFC Tonight” reporter Ariel Helwani.
Mir is No. 10 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA heavyweight rankings, and Duffee is unranked. However, the division has few other options for Mir since most ranked fighters are booked for upcoming fights.
Mir, who recently snapped a four-fight skid with a quick, 100-second knockout of Antonio Silva in February’s UFC Fight Night 61 headliner, said a potential rubber match with Lesnar was a big motivator for that fight. However, Lesnar recently re-signed with the WWE and – for now, at least – closed the door on a potential UFC return and a fight with the 35-year-old Mir.
That’s good news for Duffee, who’s looking for an opponent following a 33-second knockout win over Anthony Hamilton at UFC 181 in December. It was the 29-year-old’s third straight victory – all of which have come via knockout. In fact, all nine of the fighter’s career wins are knockouts.
